Happiness Found in Taipei: Urban competitiveness starts to grow

Institute of Urban Strategies, the Mori Memorial Foundation, has just announced its latest report on Global Power City Index in October 2016. Results showed that Taipei City was ranked # 33 in the 42 cities ranking around the world. Exceeding Bangkok, Fukuoka, Jakarta, and other Asian cities, Taipei City received a total score of up to 20.4 points, which shows that its economy, R&D, natural environment and traffic accessibility have all made tremendous progress. Within these evaluated items, the natural environment has made the most progress. If looking at it from the group’s perspective, the Taipei City has a superior rank in the evaluation of managers and tourists compared to last year’s evaluation. As for the evaluation on the researchers, it shows an average rank. Taipei City must take further control over the city’s advantages and disadvantages in addition to its distinctive quality and continue to explore those concepts with high performance and to create a brand strategy that can represent this city.

Euromonitor International, a global market intelligence provider based in London, released its latest Top City Destinations Ranking in 2017. The data sources include national statistics offices, airport arrivals, and hotel accommodation stays from 58 core countries and 77 international markets. Cities around the world are ranked by the number of international tourist arrivals in 2015.

The free movement of talent has turned into a global trend. Expat assignments are great opportunities for young people to grow and broaden their horizons. As far as the cities are concerned, the attraction of international talent is the key to enhanced international competitiveness. InterNations, the largest global network for expatriates, released its survey titled Expat Insider City Ranking: The best and worst cities for expats in 2018 in November 2018. Taipei City Government was selected as the most livable city in the minds of expatriates in 2018 based on availability and quality of medical care, convenient transportation, friendly human interactions, a vibrant business outlook, and affordable cost of living. In this survey, Taipei ranks ahead of Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney, and New York.

The “Global Views” issued the results of “a Mass Survey on the Overall Competitiveness of Counties and Cities” in July 2016. Taipei City won the championship once again in a national competition with other 19 counties and cities. For Taipei City, things are just going smoothly. In addition to winning the first prize in the overall ranking of competitiveness, this city also won the first prize either in the national counties and cities ranking or among the 6 municipalities in terms of 5 aspects — “economy and employment,” “education and culture,” “environmental protection and environmental quality,” “medical treatment and hygiene” as well as “local finance.” In the two aspects of “security” and “life quality and modernization,” Taipei City has made tremendous progress in the performance ranking compared to last year although it still has a long way to go for improvement. Its urban resource conditions, historical development and orientation – plus its perfect execution in the policy– are all key factors, which enabled Taipei City to become a regular winner in terms of the economy, education, medical treatment and finance.

MasterCard Worldwide released the “Asia Pacific Destinations Index 2015” in February 2016. Taipei ranked 11th with 6.4 million tourists. By the mean length of stay of international tourists, it was 6.6 days in Taipei, second only to 9.1 days in Bali, securing second place in the Asia Pacific Region and demonstrating that the abundant and diversified tourism resources in Taipei successfully attract tourists to stay longer for an in-depth visit. As far as the amount of money international tourists spend, Taipei ranked 7th, with the annual total amount of money spent by visitors reaching USD 9.5 billion and it was named by MasterCard to be one of the benchmark cities for tourist dollars.

According to the latest “Asia-Pacific Cities of the Future 2015/16” released by fDi Intelligence under the Financial Times, Taipei secured 3rd place in the final ranking and broke its own record by defeating another 3 competitors as compared to the previous year. Taipei also won the 2nd and 4th places in terms of economic growth potential and friendly business environment. In addition, up to 24,280 patents were registered between 2010 and 2014, pushing Taipei to become the 3rd highest city of all in the survey. Innovative talent has been proactively coming to Taiwan around the world. As far as the population is concerned, Taipei is a medium-sized city with 2.5 to 5 million residents but tops the list of counterparts in terms of the overall ranking, its economic growth potential and friendly business environment. All the strengths make Taipei an optimal destination for quite a few investors.

In the “Innovative Cities Index” released by 2Thinknow on December 2015, Taipei City ranked higher and higher annually since it became one of the Top 100 cities in 2011. In 2015, Taipei rose to the 52th from the 87th slot last year and was nominated as the fastest city with an upgrade by 2Thinkknow. Although the average score is 49 to rank as a first level hub city, Taipei took the lead in the 5th place within its level. It failed the competition for the 1st level core city by just 1 point. On the other hand, if carefully observed among the Asia cities, Taipei City ranked the 9th, which is the top city in the ranking of hub cities. Its competitive potential is worthy of expectations.

LL released a report on “Globalization and Competition: The New World of Cities” on November 2015. Taipei City ranked the fifth among the emerging world cities together with other emerging cities like Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul. Taipei has entered into the critical period for globalization. It is not only a critical port of call for all major markets around the world, but also keeps the capability for critical decision-making. Taipei benefits from its particular strategic location and dynamic labor market. Its high performance of investment and impressive infrastructure are the main supportive forces for highly developed cities. In terms of the three key indices, Taipei City ranked the first in public infrastructure, and took the second place in high education level and the seventh in creative R&D capability. The review said people voted it as a “highly-competitive city”.

The London Z/Yen British consulting company published a result from the latest 18th session “Global Financial Centres Index 18 (GFCI 18)” this September 2015. London won over New York and became the largest financial center around the world with a total score of 796 points; New York took the second place with a score of 788 points; HK took the 3rd place, and the successive 4-10th places were acquired by Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Zurich, Toronto, San Francisco, and Washington, respectively. As for Taipei City, its total score was 686 points, ranking the 26th around the world and the 10th in the Asia region. It presents a steady trend as the GFCI 17, which placed it ahead of Melbourne, Beijing and other Asian cities. Taipei City continues to maintain its localization and in-depth “Local Specialists” status, which shows that its financial center is specialized with its energy and development growing steadily. In the future, Taipei City shall be more active in connecting with the world and heading towards more diversified, professional financial centers in connection with international markets.

In an issued “2015 Happy City Survey” hosted by the CommonWealth Magazine in September, 2015, Taipei City won the championship in a row as the happiest, cozy city with a 742.48 score, which exceeds other counties and cities. On top of that, Taipei City also won the championship in the 4-sub-item index comprising “economic capacity,” “environmental capacity,” “political capacity” and “culture & education capacity” for its overall performance.
